  1. NAC starves cancer cells

Give cancer the boot with this common winter therapy

When you've got cancer... and you know those malignant cells are growing inside of you... it's pretty tough to relax.

It's hard to think of ANYTHING other than getting them out!

So, you might go with the "scorched earth" approach -- chemo, radiation, and surgery -- but the "cure" can sometimes be just as bad as the cancer.

Chemo can wreck your immune system... lead to complications like cardiovascular disease and diabetes... and even make it more likely your cancer will SPREAD to other spots in your body.

And that's ALL kinds of awful.

But according to a new study, there's something safe and natural that may help you triumph against those tumors -- and you might even be using it right now to relieve your winter sniffles.

I'm talking about N-Acetyl cysteine (NAC). It's an amino acid that's commonly used as an over-the-counter decongestant... and it might also stop cancer cells cold.

In the study out of the UK, a small group of breast cancer patients who were awaiting surgery were given the maximum daily dose of NAC -- both orally and intravenously -- for three weeks.

By the end of the study, biopsies of the participants' cancerous tissue showed that NAC caused a protein called "MCT4" to plummet by a whopping 80 percent.

What does a drop in MCT4 mean?

Well, MCT4 is known to help cancer cells grow like gangbusters. It delivers energy to them from neighboring healthy cells -- and high levels of MCT4 in tumors have been linked to aggressive cancers and low survival rates.

That means that by driving down MCT4 levels, NAC can help STARVE cancer cells of what they need to grow!

The theory is that NAC's antioxidant properties can reduce oxidative stress in tumor "stroma," which is a cell compartment involved in the spread of cancer, thereby generating less fuel for MCT4 to deliver to cancer cells.

And we know from previous studies that NAC also boosts your body's levels of glutathione, a.k.a. the "master" antioxidant, a potent cancer-fighter.

I even recommend NAC in my own practice to help patients with conditions as varied as lung fibrosis, ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), MS, and liver disease -- because it's so effective at upping glutathione levels and protecting healthy cells from harm.

Of course, more research is needed before we know the best way to use NAC as a treatment for tumors.

But it's generally safe even at high dosages, and serious side effects are very rare.

Talk to a doc well-versed in integrative medicine about how to incorporate NAC into your treatment regimen.

You can find it in supplement form in many health food stores and online.

And if you're looking for more ways to fight cancer naturally, studies have shown that intravenous vitamin C is also a powerful weapon against this scourge.

  2. Special type of mushroom fights cancer

The benefits of this fungus are mushrooming

It's rare that I have anything good to share about cancer.

But today, it turns out that I have some GOOD news that, in a way, is actually OLD news.

You see, there's a mushroom called Cordyceps militaris that's been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries (since the Ming Dynasty, to be exact) to boost the immune system and strengthen energy.

And now, modern science is confirming just how valuable this ancient mushroom can be -- according to a new study, the cordyceps mushroom contains TWO compounds that work together to fight cancer.

Now, we already knew that this bright orange fungus contained a compound called cordycepin, which studies have shown can deliver a blow to cancerous tumors.

But in the study out of China, the researchers found not only cordycepin... but also upon ANOTHER compound, called pentostatin.

Pentostatin was first isolated from bacteria back in the 1990s. And as soon as its cancer-fighting potential was discovered, Big Pharma seized upon it and turned it into a commercial drug to treat leukemia and other cancers.

    No big surprises there.

Of course, as a chemo drug, pentostatin can make you feel pretty lousy, with side effects ranging from nausea and vomiting to increased risk of infection.

And though more research is needed, the hope is that getting pentostatin -- coupled with cordycepin -- from this healing mushroom might be a natural way to eradicate cancer without the misery of chemo.

While the jury's still out on how to best use the compounds from the cordyceps mushroom for cancer treatment or prevention, you can benefit from this fantastic fungus in a bunch of other ways.

Recent studies have shown that Cordyceps militaris can help your body fend off viruses and bacteria, reduce inflammation throughout your body, and even lessen fatigue -- proving what traditional Chinese medicine has known for centuries.

And the more mushrooms of ANY type you eat, the more you slash your risk of dementia.

So, how do you get your hands on Cordyceps militaris?

Well, strangely enough, it grows on the larvae and pupae of insects and spiders! It's actually a close cousin of Cordyceps sinensis, another cancer-fighting fungus that grows on the bodies of caterpillars.

If that doesn't exactly sound appetizing to you, though, you don't have to go foraging for bugs to snag these medicinal mushrooms. You can find both kinds of cordyceps as a supplement-- in dried, powdered, or capsule forms -- online or at your local health food store.

You can make a tea out of the dried ones, but if you live near an Asian market and you're feeling adventurous, you might even try them fresh. Both are delicious when added to soups and stews -- which is how the Chinese prepare them.
