This surprising sweet treat keeps diabetes at bay

The older we get, the more our family members and friends seem to come back from their doctors' offices with a diagnosis of diabetes... and a prescription in their hand.

According to a 2012 survey, diabetes now affects over 29 million people -- and 28 million of them suffer from type 2 diabetes, a number that has grown nearly FIVE TIMES over since 1980.

It happens to so many people that you might think raging blood sugar is just part of getting older!

It's a real shame, because it doesn't have to be this way. Type 2 diabetes is when your body becomes resistant to insulin and your blood sugar goes haywire.

It's time to celebrate the healing power of food -- because a new study shows that eating berries may drastically reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes.

Berries are loaded with antioxidant compounds called anthocyanins, a type of flavonoid. As I've shared with you before, flavonoids can also help fight everything from high blood pressure to fatigue.

Chinese researchers have now found that anthocyanins can also regulate your inflammatory response. And if there's one thing I've learned throughout my career, it's that inflammation is one of the most significant causes of literally hundreds of diseases -- and diabetes is no exception.

Researchers looked at nearly 400,000 people from eight studies and found that taking anthocyanin reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes by 15 percent.

That's good, but it turns out that eating berries was even better -- because berry intake overall was linked to an 18 percent reduction in type 2 diabetes.

And for every additional 7.5 mg of anthocyanin or additional 17 g of berries a day, the risk dropped by another five percent!

Berries aren't just a summertime treat, because red currants, cranberries, huckleberries, and grapes (yes, they're berries!) are harvested through the fall and winter.

Eating berries can help when fighting type 2 diabetes, but there's a limit as to how many of them you can -- or should -- eat. After all, they may be natural, but that's a LOT of sugar to be consuming, especially when your blood sugar is a concern.
