Want to live longer? Have more sex!

Sex doesn't just make you feel alive. Sex will also keep you alive -- and if you don't "do it" regularly, you could find yourself facing an early expiration date.

Well, if you're a fruit fly anyway.

New research on the bugs finds that being denied sex can cause stress levels to skyrocket and trigger the body to burn off its supply of fat.

Maybe that sounds like the start of a daffy new fad diet -- LOSE WEIGHT THROUGH ABSTINENCE! -- but this wasn't just a matter of losing the insect equivalent of a spare tire.

No, they burned off their essential fat stores -- making them more prone to starvation, and shortening their buggy little lives.

I doubt any human would ever waste away from lack of sex (although it could certainly feel that way at times). But don't dismiss this study, either, because fruit flies and humans have a lot in common, at least on the genetic level.

We share some brain chemistry and basic neurological functions, and roughly 75 percent of all diseases in humans have equivalents in fruit flies.

In other words, there could be something to this -- and it would certainly help explain why humans who don't "do it" regularly have a higher risk of disease and an early death.

In the flies, regular sex was even able to undo some of the damage of aging -- and, again, this is not unique to them. In humans, regular sex is proven to boost the immune system, protect the heart, fight pain, prevent depression and improve longevity.

And even if sex doesn't extend your life, it will at the very least make the years you have more enjoyable.

PS: Seniors often ask me when it's safe to have sex after a heart attack. Short answer: Sooner than you think.

I had the complete guide to safe sex for heart patients in the October 2013 issue of my Douglass Report newsletter. Subscribers, use the password in your current issue to login and read it online.
